Police ask for public’s help solving 2022 quadruple Birmingham shooting that left 2 dead

Birmingham police are asking for the public’s help in providing information that could lead to an arrest in a quadruple shooting last year that left two men dead.

The deadly shooting happened shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 3, 2022, in Elyton Village. Killed were Jalen “Hector” Tolbert, 24, and Marquse Yarbrough, 25.

Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Third Avenue West on a call of multiple people shot in the area. The police were notified by Shot Spotter, the city’s gunfire detection system, as well as 911 calls from community members.

Shot Spotter picked up more than 30 rounds fired.

Officers arrived on the scene and found Tolbert and Yarbrough lying in the roadway suffering from gunshot wounds. A third adult male was observed inside an apartment suffering from gunshot wounds.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service took all three victims to UAB Hospital, where Tolbert and Yarbrough were pronounced dead.

A fourth victim showed up to UAB Hospital via private vehicle with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries.

One of the surviving victims was Tolbert’s cousin.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the investigation shows that multiple suspects exited a vehicle and opened fire on the victims.
